Creative Languages Cafe

The Creative Languages Cafe was commissioned by Colours of Redbridge and their Community Producers. As the programme’s designer, I collaborated closely with local language experts to create a series of interactive and engaging sessions. Each session was a celebration of the rich tapestry of languages and cultures in Redbridge, an area renowned for its diverse population. As a local artist and resident, this project was particularly meaningful to me, reflecting my commitment to my home and its community.

Throughout the project, we explored five different languages that hold significance within our community: Tamil, Urdu, Romanian, Bengali, and British Sign Language (BSL). The aim was to not only teach language through traditional methods but also to immerse participants in the cultural nuances of each language through creative crafts. For instance, attendees engaged in activities such as Romanian cross-stitch embroidery and Bengali Alpana painting, enriching their learning experience.

To complement each language session, Punam Vaja from Khao Suppers crafted a bespoke menu, offering participants the chance to sample a sweet and savoury treat along with a themed tea, enhancing the sensory experience and deepening the cultural immersion.

Each gathering served as a platform for participants to share stories, experiences, and create together, using language and craft as starting points for conversation, connection, and community building. The project culminated with BSL, incorporating henna (paying due to the South Asian communities in Redbridge) and hand painting to visually enhance the communication learned through sign language. These activities were not just educational; they were a celebration of the linguistic diversity that enriches Redbridge.

The Creative Languages Cafe created a space that was warm, safe, and inviting, utilising language learning as a ‘conversation starter’ and a ‘community builder’. This series of gatherings was a thoughtful exploration into how language, art, and culinary experiences can unite diverse groups, fostering a shared sense of identity and community spirit.
